LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Thanks to a Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament, one Las Vegas family was able to bring donated school supplies and books to South Africa.

“We have filled our library,” Racquel Boumah told FOX5 Monday morning. “It had so much stuff inside of it! It was overflowing, as a matter of fact. We had books and toys and art supplies.”

Racquel and her son Justin hosted the tournament back in August, and thanks to an outpouring of community support, were able to build a new library near George, South Africa.

The Boumahs picked the area because it had little access to education. While it is a central location, kids will still have to walk an hour from their villages to get to the library.

The library will also share a building with an organization that provides a safe place for at-risk youth.

“Kids will walk down a ravine, through a river, and up a ravine just to get to the closest place where they can receive some type of education assistance and feel safe,” Racquel told FOX5.

During their trip, the Boumahs decorated the new library with fresh coats of paint and installed new bookshelves.

This is not the family’s first mission to Africa, but it is their most successful. They told FOX5 they raised much more supplies this year than they ever had before. The reaction from kids in the area was priceless to them.

“They were very excited,” 9-year-old Justin exclaimed. “They were like, ‘Wow!’”

Racquel added, “You just see these heads peeking over the corner because they just couldn’t stop looking, and then when we opened the library, it was just, ‘Ahhh!’ I mean, the kids were so excited.”
