LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — As Valentine’s Day approaches, one Las Vegas wholesale flower business is working around the clock to meet demand, continuing a story that began more than 30 years ago with one van, a handful of flowers, and an act of kindness.
Las Vegas Floral Wholesale operates out of a warehouse near the Strip, where Valentine’s Day preparations involve months of planning, global imports, and long hours for the entire team.
“I’m always very relieved when it’s done. It’s a hard holiday on my whole team. They work really long, hard hours,” said Debora Newson, owner of Las Vegas Floral Wholesale.
Struggling start to family business
Newson started the company 33 years ago when she was 28 she had given birth to her second child.
“No, it was not easy. It was difficult. I was 28 years old. I had just had my second child, you know, and right after I started here, and then I ended up with a third child. So no, it wasn’t easy. But we did it,” Newson said.
For years, Newson ran the business on her own. When she opened her home to Tony Tejeda, everything changed.
“I was looking for someone to help me with my children. And so he and his girlfriend at the time moved in with me and stayed home to take care of the kids,” Newson said.
Building a family operation
Tejeda came to the U.S. from El Salvador and learned about American business customs while living with Newson’s family.
“Because of their origins, mine are different, but we have learned a lot from them, and I have grown a lot with them. Their customs, the way they treat people,” Tejeda said.
What started as helping with deliveries grew into something much larger.
“Now we have seven vehicles operating for delivery, and we started with just one vehicle. So imagine the difference,” said Tejeda, who now works as the warehouse supervisor.
Thirty years later, Tejeda remains with the company, and his brother also works there.
“For those who are here and those who are on their way, don’t lose hope, there are always doors open,” Tejeda said.
Las Vegas Floral Wholesale plans to relocate to a larger building this summer as the company continues expanding operations across the Las Vegas Valley.
