LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, were well-known for their work with Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit that builds homes for low-income families around the world.
The couple visited Las Vegas 33 years ago to celebrate the first home built in the valley by the nonprofit’s local affiliate. Virginia Price was the first homeowner and still lives in the house in the Historic Westside.
“Jimmy Carter was the one that nailed the address on for me,” Price said. “I didn’t think that I would be here as long as I have been but it has been a blessing.”
At the time, Price had four young children and was living a two-bedroom apartment.
“It was amazing, there were so many people that showed up,” she said.
The former president was also the first guest.
“He had to use the restroom, and there was no other place for him to go except for the house, so they opened up house for him to go and relieve himself and he was the first one to do that in this house,” she added.
The Carter’s worked alongside more than 100,000 volunteers who have built, renovated or repaired nearly 4,500 homes in 14 countries.
“It is definitely something that I appreciated, it’s the gift that keeps on giving because my children will have it and they can pass it on to their children, and he is a wonderful man,” Price said.
Price says she wants to submit her house for historic preservation once it’s 50 years old.
