LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – University Medical Center noticed an increased number of people entering the ER with viral infections like colds, respiratory syncytial virus and the flu during the holiday season.

The Medical Director of the Emergency Department at UMC, Dr. Ketan Patel says many people are traveling, congregating in large groups, and on top of it they’re stressed, resulting in an uptick.

“I would say our census usually goes up this time a year especially around Christmas, leading into New Year’s,” Dr. Patel explained. “Especially with Las Vegas being a big tourist destination, we see a lot of individuals come visiting the city and coming to the ER to seek help.”

Dr. Patel explained that a lot of primary care offices and clinics are closed during the holiday season, leading people to the ER to seek treatment.

With the New Year celebrations coming up, Dr. Patel suggests practicing good habits like washing your hands and staying hydrated to avoid the ER room with a respiratory virus.
