LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Healthy Living Institute at UMC Hospital is offering free diabetes education classes in Spanish to help the Hispanic community manage a disease that disproportionately affects them.

Amy Runge, a clinical supervisor at the Healthy Living Institute, explained the Hispanic population is 66 percent more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes compared to the general population.

These classes aim to empower participants by providing practical tools for managing the condition.

“It’s a way to make it not so scary and clinical and break it down to, these are things we can all be doing regardless of a diagnosis and all should be doing to improve our health,” Runge said.

One of the highlights of this course is a board game-style activity that simplifies topics like nutrition and exercise.

“What we are able to do is take their hold their hand,” Runge said. “At that point, we’re able to provide that one-on-one and even group setting, this opportunity allows them to engage with peers and adult learners who learn the same boat and who can present their different challenges and learn from one another.”

The Healthy Living Institute at UMC will be holding their next Spanish diabetes class on Jan. 22, 2025. People interested in registering for the class can visit University Medical Center Southern Nevada website or call (702) 383-7353.
