Las Vegas Latina becomes first in family to graduate college with help from nonprofit

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – In a city where thousands of teens struggle to make it to graduation, nonprofit organization Project 150 was created.

Project 150 offers free clothing, food and financial assistance for students so they’re able to focus on their education.

“Just to provide the opportunity for students to go to school and not have to worry about their clothing, where they are going to get their school supplies or their food for their family or for themselves,” said program manager, Senia Roybal.

Melanie Azame’s story spans two continents – she, along with her mother, immigrated to the United States from Argentina when she was just three years old. Growing up in Las Vegas, she says she was determined to change her family’s future.

“Education was a big thing in my family and it’s a big value of mine. That’s why I decided that after high school, no matter what, I wanted to continue my education through college,” Azame said.

In just a few days, Melanie will be the first in her whole family to graduate college. This is thanks, in part, to a Project 150 scholarship.

“They financially supported me all four years of university, and that allowed me to really focus on my education,” Azame said.

The program helps Nevada students with at least a 2.0 GPA pursue college, trade school or university – awarding up to $4,000 per student.

“Last year, we’re able to award 96 scholarships to students pursuing a higher education in Nevada, but this year, we’re hoping to award over 100 students.” Roybal said.

After four years of sacrifice, support and quiet strength, Melanie no longer wonders if college is possible for a first generation immigrant.

She is proof that it is.

“Don’t choose to not go to university because of the finances,” Azame said. “There’s scholarships out there that will help you, it just takes time looking for them. I know being a first gen, it’s scary not knowing which one to trust or even applying, but just take a shot at it.”
