LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The man accused of dumping a litter of puppies into a Las Vegas dumpster was sentenced to prison, according to court records.

In January, Micheal Grindrod pleaded guilty of one count of cruelty to animals, a felony. He was sentenced to a minimum 1 year in prison with the possibility of parole. He was granted credit for 71 days served in jail.

Grindrod originally faced five felony counts after he dumped nine two-week old puppies into a dumpster in November. He was accused of dousing the puppies with chemicals before placing them in a trash bag.

A Las Vegas animal shelter is treating eight two-week old puppies that were found in a dumpster inside a trash bag.

When police asked the suspect why, Grindrod said that he could not take care of all the puppies but did not want them to suffer. He added that he thought the chemicals would “expedite the process,” an arrest report said.

One of the nine puppies would later be euthanized.

Prison records show Grindrod has a parole hearing set for March 12.
