LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The man accused of killing a 12-year-old boy crossing the street in an alleged DUI crash was sentenced to up to 17 years in court Monday morning.

The crash happened on Friday, Oct. 3, just before 8 a.m.

According to the family, 12-year-old Cristofer Suarez was on his way to school for Mariachi practice. After the crash, Suarez spent the weekend on life support at UMC before passing away on the following Monday.

On Monday, February 23, Brooks accepted a plea deal to a lesser charge of duty to stop.

After agreeing to the plea deal Brooks will be required to pay around $6,900 in restitution to the victim’s family and will serve 7 – 17 years in prison.

Police said Brooks admitted to his involvement in the crash, and that he smoked marijuana while getting his kids ready for school between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m.
