LAS VEGAS — A bullet went through a Las Vegas apartment early Sunday morning after an unknown shooter fired several rounds in a neighborhood east of downtown.
Michael Garcia said he heard dozens of gunshots around his apartment building. One bullet hit his car, and another went through his apartment and into his neighbor’s unit. Nobody was hurt.
“It kind of shook me a little bit to where I didn’t even move. I just heard bullets,” Garcia said.
Garcia said he had a friend spend the night the day before the shooting.
“If he didn’t have company from out of town, he’d have been sleeping right here. How am I going to wake up in the morning knowing one of my veteran buddies is dead?” Garcia said.
Shooting tied to two other incidents
Metro Police said the shooting was tied to two other incidents. Police did not provide information on anyone being brought into custody.
Garcia said the violence is common in his area.
“About maybe 2 weeks, 3 weeks ago, I heard gunshots, about 20 shots,” Garcia said. “I heard people screaming and it scared me.”
Garcia said most residents in his building are veterans.
“Most of these people that live here are veterans. We’ve been overseas, we’ve been to war, and I got to come home and die on my couch,” he said.
Garcia said building a police substation in the area would help make things safer. After nine years in his apartment, he said he’s ready to move.
“I got kids, I got grandkids, you know?” Garcia said. “I don’t want them around here because I’m afraid for their safety, you know? It’s crazy right here.”
Garcia said he hopes to move out within the next month and has contacted the VA to help him find a new place.
The investigation is ongoing.
