LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Hundreds of people gathered outside a business off Sunset and Pecos Thursday morning.

Many of them believed they were prepared to start a new job, but instead they walked away feeling uneasy that their sensitive information could be used against them.

“My hands are shaking because social security number is everything in this country,” Johan Ledesma, shared in Spanish.

The Las Vegas Metro Police say it all started on January 21 when an online ad was posted looking for third party Amazon delivery drivers. The information spread quickly by word of mouth throughout the Cuban community. They were told to go to the business for job opportunity – an opportunity they later learned does not exist.

“Today several of our victims returned to the business and found that the business had been vacated by the persons involved and at that time, they believed that they were the victims of a scam,” an officer with the Las Vegas Metro Police said.

Victims said they filled out an application and paid a $200 fee believing it was for a drug test. These victims were given this paper with their drug test appointment details. They showed up to various Quest Diagnostics in Las Vegas. They say when they got there, employees informed them they were not aware of their appointments. That’s when they said they realized it was all a scam.

“Whoever paid cash is out of their money and besides that their identity their social security numbers their resident card their drivers license number their address everything is out there right now with this group of people that we don’t know who they are what is it they’re really after,” victim Anabel Zamora said.

Victims are not only out of money, but they also worry the sensitive information they gave to these people will be used against them.

“It’s really creepy what is happening right now, its more than the money but it’s the documents they have our social, residency, driver’s license,” another victim, Frank Riveron expressed.

One victim tells me, these people took more than just his money and information

“They took advantage of the Cuban community because we are so trusting and desperate for jobs and we don’t have any knowledge about these kinds of scams that can happen,” Adrian Ojea said.
