Las Vegas nonprofit Caridad celebrates 15 years of helping locals in need

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — What started as a small local initiative in downtown Las Vegas has grown into a full-scale nonprofit organization. On Saturday, Caridad celebrated 15 years of helping locals in need.

“We are a local Las Vegas nonprofit that helps the homeless. We do that through jobs integration for disabled veterans through gardening. They sell their produce to bars and restaurant partners,” said Meredith Spriggs, Chief Kindness Officer for Caridad.

Over the years, Caridad has found creative ways to give to the community. That spirit was on full display Saturday as the organization marked its anniversary alongside the Las Vegas Shufflers.

“We’re a community-based dance group here in Las Vegas where we get together and try to find the best parts of being active in the dance scene,” said Alexander Vandenberg of the Las Vegas Shufflers.

Spriggs said this was the perfect celebration for them.

“We love to have a party, we love to have a good time, and so some of the people even in our work program are here today,” Spriggs said. “100% of the proceeds are going back to our workers in our work program.”

Together, the dancers and volunteers have worked to show that helping others can be meaningful while fun.

“We all scream to create something new, something bigger, where we’re putting Caridad and ourselves in a wider space to be seen so we can raise money to humanize the homeless,” Vandenberg said.

As Caridad moves into its next chapter, Spriggs said she is reminding the community that kindness is an action word.

“We can always use help, especially with the holidays coming up; we’ve got meals that we need help serving at our property,” Spriggs said.
