LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Las Vegas non-profit is launching a food assistance program as SNAP benefits approach expiration for recipients.

Vegas Helps is now accepting applications for its food box program. The organization plans to purchase approximately $10,000 worth of food this weekend and package it for SNAP recipients.

People can apply for the food boxes on the organization’s website at VegasHelps.com, said Vegas Helps founder Justin Woo.

“So right now, people are actually applying for these boxes, what we call the food box program, on our website at VegasHelps.com. And we’ll vet these out as much as we can. And on Monday, we’ll have the boxes prepared and probably do distribution in the Henderson area,” Woo said.

The organization may expand distribution to other areas based on need.

“And depending upon where we see the need, we may move some of the boxes up to, you know, North Las Vegas or another area,” Woo said.

Woo said the program was created in response to problems with SNAP and EBT benefits during the government shutdown.

“So with everything going on with the government shutdown, you know, we see the problems with the SNAP and the EBT and wanted to help some people out and, you know, get something started. Hopefully it’s a little bit of a movement,” Woo said.

Vegas Helps was started in 2020 to perform small acts of kindness for southern Nevada residents, Woo said.
