LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A Las Vegas nonprofit is offering homebuyer education taught entirely in Spanish for Latino families in Southern Nevada, including first-generation buyers navigating the process in a second language.

Chicanos Por La Causa, a nonprofit organization serving the Las Vegas Valley, primarily works with families earning 80 percent of the area median income or below, many of them Latino households, according to Nevada Housing Director Rumaldo Chaidez.

What the program covers

Chaidez said the curriculum covers a range of financial topics designed to prepare buyers for the full homeownership process.

“Money management, banking basics, we talk about everything to do about credit, how to maintain and work on your credit if it’s not up to par. We also talk about the realtor process,” Chaidez said.

The organization also brings in outside professionals to give participants a broader view of the industry.

“We invite external partners in the industry like realtors and lenders, inspectors and insurance agents to come and provide their perspective on their industry and how they play a part in the home buying process,” Chaidez said.

Down payment assistance and tax season

Chaidez said CPLC also offers a down payment assistance program, which many families combine with their tax returns to meet down payment and closing cost requirements.

“Usually when it’s tax time, Latino families kind of utilize that tax return as a form of part of their down payment. So in combination, what we provide as a down payment assistance program, they use that for requirements of a down payment and closing costs,” Chaidez said.

History and focus

CPLC has been operating in the Las Vegas Valley since 2011, when it launched during the housing crisis with a focus on mortgage default. Chaidez said the organization has since shifted its primary mission toward creating new homeowners, particularly in communities that have historically lagged behind in homeownership rates.

“We started in 2011 during the housing crisis, our primary focus was mortgage default back then. But now our big focus is homeownership, creating new homeowners,” Chaidez said.

Workshop schedule

Homebuyer workshops are held every Saturday. The first two Saturdays of each month are conducted in English, and the remaining Saturdays are offered in Spanish. More information is available on the Chicanos Por La Causa website.
