LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Metro Police say speeding is one of the top reasons for the increasing trend of deadly roadways.
According to LVMPD Fatal Detail Sgt. Richard Rundell, there have been 111 fatal crashes so far this year.
Rundell explained that each of those crashes represents an investigation that can take anywhere from three months to over one year.
“If you think about a collision, I always talk about puzzle pieces. You take 1000 puzzle pieces and you have to put them back together,” Rundell said.
To solve the puzzle, Rundell would collect clues, including where the involved cars ended up, tire marks in the roadway, any available video, witness statements, and airbag control modules.
Airbag control modules are a black-box device that Rundell uses to record critical data at the scene of a crash.
3D images of the scene are taken and uploaded using a panoramic camera.
Each strategically placed panoramic camera is identified as a red dot in the image above.
Rundell shared the 3D models are referred back to throughout the investigation.
The images could also be used in court to bring the jury to the crash scene virtually.
He says their Fatal Detail Detectives handle about 30 cases yearly, which is double the number of cases detectives handle in other jurisdictions.
These 3D models are said to help detectives manage their large caseload by reducing scene time and painting a more accurate picture of each crash.
