LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is inviting the media to its headquarters to learn more about a fatal shooting involving its officers.

Police said the shooting happened in the 200 block of North 9th Street, between Ogden and Stewart Avenue Thursday afternoon.

Captain Kurt McKenize explained that LVMPD dispatch initially received a call reporting “a subject in an apartment complex armed with a long gun.”

Officers responded to the scene and located the armed suspect and told him to drop the weapon. He reportedly refused and aimed the long gun at officers.

35-year-old Officer Matthew Kravetz and 39-year-old Officer Andrews Buckland fired at the suspect, hitting him. Medical personnel responded and the suspect was declared dead at the scene. No police officers were injured.

Captain McKenize added that it is not yet known if the suspect lived at the apartment complex in question.

Officer Kravetz has been employed with LVMPD since 2015, while Officer Buckland has been with LVMPD since 2017. Both are assigned to the Tourist Safety Division within the Downtown Area Command. Both officers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

The media briefing is expected to start around 3 p.m. with Assistant Sheriff Yasenia Yatomi. FOX5 plans to be at the briefing. You could watch it through the video player above.
