LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported a 60% drop in officer-involved shootings last year compared to the previous year.
The department credits intensive academy and ongoing training for helping officers make better decisions.
“Our officers are out there every single day, making split‑second decisions that could affect people’s lives,” said LVMPD Public Information Officer Sergeant Jakob Shallenberger. “A lot of that reduction in officer‑involved shootings is because of the amount and type of training they get.”
Training requirements
New recruits complete more than 1,000 hours of classes, physical training and stress inoculation in the academy, followed by roughly a year of field training before patrolling on their own.
Metro has also tripled training at its Joint Training Institute, where officers train alongside other police agencies and fire departments to prepare for major incidents.
