LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas Metropolitan Police are asking for the public’s help in solving a 43-year-old murder case.
On Jan. 21, 1983, Fred Robert Sims, 49, disappeared after dining with his wife at a Denny’s restaurant on Boulder Highway. When his wife returned from the restroom, Sims was gone.
Sims’ wife searched for him, waited, and contacted her son for a ride home. As they drove home, they discovered Sims lying partially in the roadway near Harmon Avenue and Shepherd Drive, surrounded by witnesses. He had been shot multiple times.
Detectives believe Sims was followed out of the restaurant. Witnesses reported a man came into the Denny’s that night, sat at the counter, ordered food, then moved closer into a booth near Sims and his wife. When Sims exited the restaurant, the man hurriedly paid his bill and followed him outside.
Investigators believe the suspect attempted to rob Sims, and a confrontation turned into a chase, ending with Sims being shot multiple times. In the days that followed, newspaper articles detailed the murder as detectives urgently searched for the man responsible.

Investigators created a composite sketch of the suspect. The suspect is still unknown.
