LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas Metro Police said most traffic crashes are preventable as the department works to address rising fatalities on valley roadways.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has recorded three motorcycle deaths so far this year in its jurisdiction. A motorcyclist died three months after crashing into a light pole, investigators said Tuesday.
Officers conducted training demonstrations with the media at the Motor Speedway to show the dangers of improper braking and excessive speed.
Motorcycle safety focus
Metro police officers emphasized that most motorcyclists use only their back brakes, which is incorrect technique. The department wants all motorcyclists to use both front and back brakes and slow down ahead of time when approaching intersections.
During a demonstration, an officer got into a car, drove at 45 mph before slamming on brakes when suddenly reaching an intersection. A second demonstration at 65 mph showed the jarring impact of sudden braking at higher speeds.
“Now imagine if you were distracted and didn’t brake at all or couldn’t brake in time,” the demonstration showed. That is what could lead to crashes and deaths on our roads, according to LVMPD.
Metro Police recorded 163 traffic deaths in its jurisdiction in 2025. The department has recorded 10 deaths so far this year.
