LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Las Vegas Metro Police are expected to provide new details Thursday afternoon about a south valley hostage situation that left a 3-year-old dead.

On Monday, Jan. 2 around 1:20 a.m., Las Vegas Metro Police officers responded to reports of a man battering a woman and attempting to remove a child from an apartment complex in the 8400 block of South Maryland Parkway, near Wigwam Avenue.

FOX5 spoke with the woman, who identified the child as her own and the suspect as the boy’s father.

LVMPD said during an initial briefing that officers then fired at the suspect while he had a gun pointed at the child. Police added that the suspect simultaneously shot the child, and both later died from their injuries.

This marks the third officer-involved shooting in LVMPD’s jurisdiction for 2026.

LVMPD is expected to address the media at 3:30 p.m.
