LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said they will release more details on a fatal shooting involving one of their officers.

Metro said they will host a media briefing at 3 p.m. FOX5 plans to be there to stream the event and provide the latest.

The shooting happened Friday morning in the 5100 block of Rawhide Street, near Russell and Nellis.

Las Vegas police are investigating a shooting in the southeast valley on Friday morning.

According to Metro Captain Kurt McKenzie, a male suspect was attempting to open door handles and threatening residents.

Officers arrived on the scene to find the individual hiding behind a vehicle, and not cooperating with officers. McKenzie says he then grabbed an aluminum baseball bat from the vehicle’s passenger side and turned to officers.

When less-lethal options failed, Metro says 21-year-old Officer Samuel Garcia shot at the suspect. He has been employed with Metro since 2022 and is currently assigned to the Community Safety Division in the Southeast Area Command.

Police said the suspect died on scene.

No officers were injured, according to LVMPD.

This is the 9th officer-involved shooting of 2024. There were 10 in 2023. Metro police are still investigating.

This is a developing story.
