LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Las Vegas Metro Police released a warning for a text message scam circulating.

Metro Police said they received word that text messages or phone calls are being sent to residents.

The calls or texts may look like they are coming from official numbers and may even provide badge numbers and names of law enforcement officials, federal judges or courthourse addresses.

The scammers have been using LVMPD official names as well.

Police say the scam tries to intimidate the victim into paying a fine for missing jury duty, identity theft claims or other offenses to prevent arrests.

“These calls or text messages are NOT legit and there are numerous red flags,” police said.

Las Vegas police say they will never ask for credit, debit or gift card numbers, bank routing or account numbers, bitcoin or cryptocurrency, and personal or financial information.

Those who receive a message or phone call could authenticate the call with law enforcement and report it to the FTC. Reports could remain anonymous.
