LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A small private school near Rainbow Boulevard and Sahara Avenue says enrollment for the upcoming school year is at its lowest point ever, and co-founders warn the school could close if numbers do not improve.
Journey Education was founded in 2007 by sisters-in-law Sydney Jensen and Becky Jensen. The school serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
“We knew we wanted something intimate, very academically focused, and really concentrated on students’ needs, so we started this school,” Sydney Jensen said.
Enrollment at roughly half capacity
Current enrollment for next year sits at approximately 50 students — about half the school’s maximum capacity. Tuition runs $13,500 a year.
“We have always had the reserve and are still operating OK, but we really had to say, ‘Hey, we have some concerns if we can’t get our enrollment up,’” Sydney Jensen said.

Becky Jensen said affordability has been a priority since the school opened.
“We have always been believers in making education affordable in the valley,” Becky Jensen said. “We see that maybe there are private schools that are out of reach for some families, but Journey isn’t like that — we are affordable, and we want to keep it that way.”
Parents concerned about potential closure
The prospect of the school closing has raised concerns among current families. Parent Jaime Lynch, whose daughter is in kindergarten, said she has already begun researching alternatives.
“I was terrified because I am so happy with her here at Journey, and I’ve been doing some research just in case, and I mean it’s night and day,” Lynch said.
Lynch said the school’s low student-to-teacher ratio — 12:1 — has made a difference for her daughter.
“I’ve seen my daughter just progress over this past year in every way — academically, socially,” Lynch said.
Broader enrollment decline across the valley
The founders said they are hopeful enrollment numbers will recover over the summer. The decline at Journey Education comes as the Clark County School District projects a decrease of more than 5,000 students in enrollment next fall.
