LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Raiders head coaching search is extending at least into the weekend with a new interview scheduled for Saturday, as a top candidate has dropped out of the running.
On Saturday, the decision makers for the Raiders and Klint Kubiak will meet for a second interview but the first time in person. Kubiak’s name has been on the short list for the Raiders since Pete Carroll was fired.
The Seahawks offensive coordinator is considered a dynamic play caller who can build an offense around presumptive number one overall pick Fernando Mendoza along with running back Ashton Jeanty and tight end Brock Bowers.
NFL rules complicate timeline
Because the Seahawks are in the Super Bowl, NFL rules prohibit a deal being signed. However, the two sides could come to an agreement in principle and then make it official the day after the Super Bowl.
If the Raiders and Kubiak decide to get a deal done, all of the framework will be hashed out on Saturday. The team cannot have contact with him after that until the Super Bowl is over.
Kubiak is also interviewing with the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday.
Candidate withdraws from consideration
Late Thursday, Broncos passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Davis Webb withdrew his name from consideration for the Raiders job and will focus on becoming an offensive coordinator. Webb did not want to wait and be a possible fall back if the Kubiak deal did not happen.
Whoever is hired as head coach will definitely have to get a new defensive coordinator. Patrick Graham has taken the same job with the Pittsburgh Steelers and will work under new head coach Mike McCarthy.
