LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Residents of Holiday Montara Meadows Senior Living Center in Las Vegas are among the thousands without power due to high winds.
On Tuesday, July 1, wind gusts over 60 mph caused sweeping power outages across the valley.
According to NV Energy, there is no estimated time for restoration, but crews are working to restore power at multiple points around the valley.
A letter sent to the families of residents on Wednesday morning, which FOX5 has obtained, stated that the center was hit by the outage. Since then, staff have been regularly checking on residents and have brought in additional security.
Additionally, buses were brought to the facility to act as cooling centers and mobile charging units for residents and emergency equipment.
FOX5 spoke with Ross Vergara, whose father lives at Montara Meadows. His father called him when the power went out, asking for food and supplies, and Vergara left work to head to the shelter, where he was met with a chaotic scene. “I could tell right away the wind was still gusting, and it was raining. When I got to the corner of Pecos and Tropicana, there were a number of utility vehicles there, police vehicles directing traffic and rerouting us.”
He continued, “When I finally got to that corner, I could see from afar that there was debris on Tropicana. I went around the back and saw more debris in the neighborhood streets, and also saw some fallen trees. I had not seen anything like this since I moved here in October 2019.”
Vergara said residents were informed they would be moved to the emergency shelter at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Wednesday, and may remain there for two days.
FOX5 has reached out to Montara Meadows for an interview, but management was not immediately available for comment.
