LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A Las Vegas Valley animal shelter is asking pet owners to check microchips as a company has shut down.

Save This Life, a pet microchipping company, went out of business. The Animal Foundation says pets microchipped under that company will need to update it with a different company.

The Animal Foundation provided the following steps for pet owners:

  1. Find your pet’s microchip number.
    1. Check your pet’s adoption papers, and veterinary records, or have them scanned at your veterinarian’s office.
  2. Look up the microchip number here.
    1. See what company the chip is registered with.
  3. If the chip is registered with Save This Life, re-register it with another company immediately.
    1. At The Animal Foundation, we currently use 24Petwatch.

After this process, the shelter is asking owners to make sure contact information is up to date.

“Too many lost pets come to the shelter with outdated microchip info,“ the shelter said. ‘We can’t reunite them with their families.”
