LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Tackling bullying by talking about it.
A group of young students in the valley came together to share their stories at the first-ever anti-bullying conference and quickly realized they weren’t alone.
They’d all experienced bullying at some point. That’s why Hyde Park Middle School student, Hanna Aschenaki was inspired to do something about it.
Around 75 people showed up to the event in the west valley.
Aschenaki’s mom tells FOX5 Hanna’s middle school took to the movement with posters all over the school.
Hanna and her mother tried to get a few counselors from the Clark County School District to attend the event.
Her mom says even though they didn’t show, the manager with the Department of Youth Development with the City of Las Vegas is very receptive to the idea of the anti-bullying campaign.
Hanna explains how it will take a village to solve the problem.
“I think that each entity within the city, including students, parents, educators and school districts, I think they should start by having open conversations about bullying and come up with and implement a standardized anti-bullying curriculum through the schools quarterly,” Aschenaki said.
Hanna says awareness is needed now more than ever, since the problems don’t stop in the classroom.
“With social media, like on the rise, it’s everywhere,” Aschenaki said. “It’s not just at school anymore, so the kids take it home with them as well and they can’t escape that.“
Hanna’s mom says based on Sunday’s turnout, they plan on doing anti-bullying events once a month.
If your child is being bullied at school, CCSD wants to know about it.
Parents and students are encouraged to report bullying or cyberbullying through the SafeVoice app.
