LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Law enforcement, schools and local officials came together at various events on Safe Travels Day to emphasize road safety for drivers, pedestrians and riders of different modes of transportation, all in light of a surge of crashes and injuries.
The events across the Las Vegas Valley helped send a message: drivers and families need to be alert at all times, practice safety for different modes of transportation, and know the rules of the road.
Erin Breen of PedSafe Vegas and the UNLV Transportation Research Center helped organize the Leprechaun in the Crosswalk event.
“It’s been one week today since our most recent juvenile fatality, which is crazy in and of itself to say — but that, in fact, was the 12th vulnerable road user who was under the age of 18 to die in the last 10 months in our community,” Breen said. “So, this has become an issue that is in front of everyone and on everyone’s mind all the time. And the community has been outraged, which is a good thing.”
Parents urged to review safety rules and gear
Lt. Bryan Zink said parents can help teach their kids and themselves about safety gear and the rules of the road.
“We hear that a lot of times from parents, too, that their child may be involved in an accident and they don’t know that they should have put their kid in a helmet or that the state laws have changed and things like that,” Lt. Zink told FOX5. “So we’re always encouraging parents to make sure that you read the literature the beginning of the year, because it will have all the rules in there that your child will expect to follow when they’re at school.”
Lt. Zink also said safety equipment is recommended for anyone on the roadway. “Just as a safety note, you’re going to be out anywhere on our roadways, adult or child, it’s always recommended that you wear some kind of safety equipment just to keep yourself safe,” he said.
