LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – FOX5 caught up with visitors near Primm driving back home to California Monday after spending the Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas.

Many of those drivers said they got an early start on the drive, hoping to beat the traffic back to California.

They were happy to see an open road without major backups for most of the drive Monday afternoon, but they weren’t so happy to see the high gas prices at the pump on the way.

“Oh my god, the gas price is high, that’s expensive,” said Curtis Moody, who was driving back home to L.A. Monday after spending the long weekend in Vegas. “I’m glad my car is a hybrid, so it’s not as bad. $50, $60 typically fills me up but man, five dollars, I wish I could’ve got gas a little bit and we’re in Vegas because it’s a little bit cheaper, but it’s all good.”

Compared to gas prices in L.A., Moody said, “I feel like it’s about the same almost.”

Gas prices Monday afternoon for regular fuel were advertised at $5.29 for regular gas in Jean, and that number went up to $5.67 at gas stations in Primm, closer to the California state line.

Several drivers said those prices are higher than what they saw on their way into Vegas late last week and higher than the prices they’ve seen in California lately.

“It’s a little bit more expensive here. It’s like, ‘wow.’ I think it was like $5.20, $5.30 over there, and now it’s like $5.67. I don’t know what’s the reason,” said one family visiting from California. “It’s expensive here compared to there, but it is what it is. I’m not going to not get gas.”

Although Las Vegas was a top travel destination this Memorial Day weekend, many of those visitors FOX5 spoke to Monday said the city was less busy than past years when they’ve visited for the same holiday weekend.
