LAS VEGAS (FOX5) —After more than a week of record heat for this time of year, a Las Vegas woman is working to help people on the streets.
Sherry Gour stocks donated water and Gatorade in her garage and loads coolers into her trailer to distribute to anyone who needs it.
“Because I love our homeless community. I have a heart for the less fortunate,” Gour said.
Gour was homeless for 10 years in Washington state. She said she knows the struggles of the streets.
She has been helping people in Las Vegas for 14 years. What started as an effort with a couple friends has grown to several volunteers with the help of Nextdoor. People help with water donations and distributing them.
“I have a very loyal community of people from the neighborhood site that support me and friends, my friends, my clients. I have a house cleaning business, so my clients load us up,” Gour said.
Gour’s efforts may be more important than ever with record temperatures right now in the 90’s.
“When it gets really really hot here, we lose a lot of them we do,” she said. “I don’t just lay a bottle of water by them. I have to shake them, make them sit up, and drink that water, or drink that Gatorade, because you don’t know how long they’ve been laying on that hot concrete.”
Along with water, Gour and volunteers feed people who are hungry.
“We need more compassion. All their circumstances are different. A lot of mental health out there. And there’s families out there,” she said.
Gour said she is not sure of a solution to the homeless problem, but she and others will be on the streets to help the best they can.
Gour and volunteers typically work downtown around Fremont Street. She plans to go out again on Saturday.
