LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – As tensions rise in the Middle East, one local World War II veteran reflected on the cost of global conflict and explained history has taught him a lot about what happens when nations clash.
As a World War II artillery instructor, he trained young soldiers who were later sent into some of the most brutal battles.
“We took heavy losses in the battle of the bulge and they’re all 19-year-old kids,” Chevez said, “One time they were in six days, 4200 killed, and I’ve trained with a lot of those kids.”
Chevez spent nearly three years training soldiers, mastering advanced artillery, including experimental tanks – he said he never forgot the cost of war.
“It’s a horrible thing, war is, because it just ruined so many lives,” he said.
Now, as tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalate, Chevez said he’s watching closely – and believes America is more prepared than ever before to face global conflict.
“And with all the new gadgets and everything going up that, we don’t have to really worry.”
While he prays today’s leaders will avoid a full-scale war, Chevez said America must always be prepared and never forget the cost.
“It’s scary in one way,” Chevez said. “Because all the young folks are the ones that always suffer the most.”
While there is no telling what comes next, Chevez said history has taught him to stay vigilant and hope for peace.
