LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Rebels 8U football team — better known across the valley as the “Donut Boys” — is headed to the National American Youth Football Championship in Florida after completing a dominant, undefeated season. Now, the team is racing against the clock to raise the money needed to get all 40 players to the national stage.
The Rebels’ defense has become something of a local legend. The team has gone three straight seasons without giving up a single point.
“We went three seasons without nobody scoring on us,” said player Harlow Fuimaono.
Parent Deja Fuimaono said the team’s recent playoff run was no different — every opponent was held scoreless.
A brotherhood built over years
Head coach Anthony Lucious said earning a spot at nationals reflects years of commitment from the young athletes and their families.
“It just shows that all the hard work and dedication is paying off,” Lucious said.
About half the team has played together since age 5, starting on the same flag football squad. Lucious said that bond is what makes them special.
“It’s like a bunch of brothers playing catch in the backyard,” he said. “They all are leaders.”
Even their nickname has roots in that unity. Every Thursday before game day, the team meets for donuts — a tradition built around keeping “zeros” on the scoreboard.
“Donuts are zeros, and that’s how many points we expect the other team to score,” Lucious said.
Community help needed
The Rebels now face their toughest challenge off the field: funding the weeklong championship trip. Lucious said the cost is roughly $2,000 per player, and many families are struggling to afford the travel, lodging, and meals. The trip is schedule for December 6th to December 14th.
“Our goal is to make sure every kid who earned this has the chance to go,” he said. “Let’s get these kids to Florida.”
Player Karter Opermeyer said the team is hoping to continue its streak on the national stage.
“I hope that we win every game and we have no losses,” he said.
