LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Latino singer known as Cuco is getting ready to take the Las Vegas stage Saturday.
From his bedroom in California to stages around the world, Cuco has become a voice for a new generation of Latinos. His bilingual songs have turned him into a cultural icon in the Hispanic community.
“I feel lucky that I love being Mexican, you know what I mean? Like, I love being Mexican,” he said.
As the son of Mexican immigrants, Omar Banos said he never set out to be a cultural trailblazer. However, mixing Spanish and English in his music became a movement.
“It’s not something that I’m just doing. It’s actually able to move people,” Cuco said.
Growing up in Los Angeles, Cuco explained he was always surrounded by Mexican culture, and Chicano rap and soul records made him into the artist he is today.
“There’s a diversity here that’s super crazy and flourishes in all fields. It’s something that for sure around my whole life. I literally had an enchilada with my mom,” he said.
For Cuco, being first generation means carrying his parents sacrifices whole proving that dreams come true.
“Shout out to us for being a first gen and doing it ‘cause them coming over here and hearing, ‘yo, this is what I want to do,’ it’s a bit hard for them to like believe that it’s possible.”
Cuco is set to perform Sept. 13 at Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas.
