LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Cleanup of an old, contaminated mine near Lake Las Vegas to make way for thousands of new homes continues. This week, neighbors were notified about the explosive next part of the plan. A letter was mailed to nearby homes and businesses telling them to prepare for blasting at the site for up to two years. It says in part:
“We anticipate blasting activities will begin after March, 2025. Each blast will occur between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 pm., M-F, with 1-2 blasts per week. We anticipate blasting activities will last up to 2 years.”
“Beep! Beep! Beep! Beep at 4:00 A.M… you can’t ignore it once you hear it… we are just literally across the street from it,” shared Irene Bjorklund who lives in Lake Las Vegas with a view of the old Three Kids Mine, now known as the Lakemoor project, out her window. Bjorklund has taken a series of pictures of dust kicked up by cleanup crews.
“It seems like it’s escalated and all of our windows are just coated with powdery crud that you have to really scrape to get off,” Bjorklund revealed.
FOX5 has met with the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection at the site multiple times. They are responsible for overseeing the cleanup of the toxic chemicals exposed through mining including lead, asbestos, arsenic, and manganese before the construction of new homes can begin.

“I’m very concerned…there has to be flatter ground to build on than what should have been a Superfund… disturbing all the neighbors for a few thousand houses,” Bjorklund contended.
Air monitoring stations around the clean-up site are recording 24/7. The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection is on site at least once a week checking the data. They also post those recordings online. Learn more about NDEP air monitoring information here:
Asbestos removal to be complete next month as Three Kids Mine cleanup well underway
Next week, there will also be a virtual meeting for neighbors about the planned blasting.
