LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Before we know it, the Formula One race will be back in Las Vegas for the third year.

However, before those fast-moving cars hit the track, a lot of preparation and training goes into keeping the drivers and spectators safe. This is where marshals play a critical role.

“The marshals are the eyes and ears of race control,” said Silvia Bellot, the vice president of Las Vegas Grand Prix sporting and race operations.

Marshals are volunteers who want the best seat in the house on race weekend and are the first ones on the track to keep things moving along.

“We select the ones who have previous experience with fire, with some rescue capabilities, and some people who have minor experience with the sport,” Bellot said.

The volunteers also receive extensive training in knowing the various flag colors and when to wave them, as well as when to jump in to help a driver or extinguish a car fire.

This year, out of 3,110 applicants – including 1,251 Southern Nevada locals – 580 were selected, with many returning to the Local Marshals Program.

Logan Ponce is one of the locals who will serve as a marshal again this year.

“I wanted to get closer to the action, so you are volunteering your time, but you are right up front,” Ponce said.

The Formula One race is set for Nov. 20–22 in Las Vegas.
