LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — On Tuesday, the Clark County School District allowed members of the media to get a sneak peak of the repairs inside Mount Charleston’s only elementary school.
The school is putting final repairs in to welcome students back on August 11th.
FOX5 was told there were new floors, a new electrical system in the building, and a new courtyard to name a few of the repairs.
We also found Dr. Michelle Muehleisen, one of the two teachers at the school getting her class room ready.
“I’m thankful they were able to reopen it so our kids up here have the opportunity for equal education they don’t have to drive 30-45 minutes to get to school,” Meuhleisen said.
Meuhleisen has been a teacher in the valley for years, but this will be her first time teaching at a small rural school.
“I’m really able to get to know the students and know what they want,” she said.
Lundy Elementary has been closed since August of 2023 since tropical storm Hilary tore through the area.
The following May parents got a letter saying the school would not reopen at all, then CCSD trustees voted to not repair the school due to the small enrollment number.
However, months later that was reversed, as community members voiced their frustration
FOX5 asked the district ‘s newest superintendent Jhone Ebert about that.
Saha: What have we learned from this entire process to make sure another entire community isn’t disrupted again when it comes to their school?
Ebert: I think you hit on the main point, process. There are times when people make decisions that is ok, and we have done that in our own lives, I’m sure. We make a decision and then we re-evaluate where we are at, and we pivot to move forward for our children. I believe the school board is always focused on our children so you assess and reassess.
As of Tuesday, 8 students are enrolled for the new school year at Lundy Elementary, and repairs for a maximum of $7.8 million have under that budget.
There will be a ribbon cutting at the school August 13th.
