LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The holiday spirit was alive and well Monday as the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department SWAT team and Superheroes for Sully donated over 2000 bikes to the 26th annual 98.5 KLUC Chet Buchanan Toy Drive.
The donation, part of a heartfelt tradition, was made in memory of Sully Mainor, who tragically died in an accident. Since his passing, Sully’s stepmother, Kristen Mainor, has dedicated herself to donating bikes to the community every year on his birthday.
“You know the Mainor family was friends with my family, our kids grew up together. They had a tragic accident where they lost their son,” said SWAT team member Levi Hancock. “It started up the Superhero’s for Sully Charity.”
Officers loaded trailers with bikes and delivered them to the toy drive, benefiting HELP of Southern Nevada, a local nonprofit dedicated to assisting low-income families and homeless individuals.
“I just kind of thought this is what I need to do, I’m gonna go in and buy everything I would have bought for his birthday. I’m going to take it to the toy drive, that year I had one bike and one friend,” shared Mainor.
Many people from across the community, many who knew Sully and his family, gathered at the drive to help unload the multitude of bikes donated this year.
The 98.5 KLUC Chet Buchanan Toy Drive will be taking new unwrapped toy donations until Dec. 16.
