LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada is helping a four-year-old enjoy the outdoors again!
Danyel Velez of Las Vegas has a heart condition that frequently causes him pain and increases his stress level. To avoid these, Velez often enjoys relaxing and having fun in his family’s courtyard, which is also the only place where he can experience the outdoors.
Heidi Tunea, Danyel’s mother, told FOX5, “When we bought the house, I was like this isn’t gonna work, we can’t bring the wheelchairs or anything out here. I said, forget it, we’ll just open the patio door and just let him sit by the door. So when it was presented to us that he was given a wish, we talked it over and I said, you know what, can you just make our backyard ADA-accessible?”
Make-A-Wish has partnered with Martin-Harris Construction to fulfill Velez’s wish of renovating his family’s courtyard.
The project included demolition, tree removal, concrete covering, painting, family-friendly searing, outdoor toys, and a wheelchair ramp.
“The idea for this is really to give him a safe space a place that really is his, that he owns alone. And hey, he’s the king of the courtyard,” said Scott Rosenzweig, President and CEO of Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada.
