LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Las Vegas police said a 57-year-old passenger died after a crash involving reckless driving early Christmas morning.
Police said the crash happened at Maryland Parkway and Sahara Avenue around 12:11 a.m. A 20-year-old identified as Giraldo Salas-Chacon sped southbound on Maryland.
At the same moment, a 52-year-old man drove a Chevrolet Equinox eastbound on Sahara, approaching Maryland.
A crash happened when the Chevrolet made a right turn on a red signal. The Dodge reached the intersection at at “reckless speeds.” The Chevrolet was redirected and landed on its roof. The 57-year-old passenger landed on a sidewalk.
Medical arrived and said the man was beyond resuscitation and died at hte scene. The other occupants of the Chevrolet as well of the Dodge driver were transported to Sunrise Hospital with “minor” injuries.
Police say Salas-Chacon showed signs of impairment. He was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center for related charges.
“The passenger’s death marked the 155th traffic-related fatality in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction for 2024,” police said. “The collision remains under investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Collision Investigation Section.”
