LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – A 40-year-old man is dead after falling around 200 feet at Zion National Park on Saturday.
According to the National Park Service, the man was canyoneering with three others through Heaps Canyon when he fell “between 150 and 200 feet” around 6 p.m.
Search and Rescue teams and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and rendered emergency medical aid to the man. The Utah Department of Public Safety extracted the man by helicopter to Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue, where he received additional aid and an Intermountain Life Flight.
The man was pronounced dead before he arrived at the hospital.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time,” said Zion National Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh.
The next morning, two of the three remaining canyoneers were also extracted by DPS helicopter, while the third received help rappelling down the canyon by SAR teams.
An investigation into the man’s death is ongoing and will be led by Zion National Park and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
