LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A 23-year-old man accused of pointing a gun at Nellis Air Force Base security has been charged with assault and weapons violations.

Pierce McFarland, 23, faces four felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon and three counts of discharging a gun within a prohibited area after police said he pointed a gun at Nellis Air Force Base security, prompting them to shoot him in the leg.

The incident occurred just after 12:30 a.m. Sept. 24 near the entrance of Nellis Air Force Base.

During a court appearance, prosecutors said McFarland had intended to end his own life during the incident at Nellis Air Force Base, telling his wife he was going to “die at the place he was born,” which is the base.

Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Amy Chelini set bail at $100,000 with high-level electronic monitoring and no access to weapons. She noted that although no amount of money would ensure someone wouldn’t harm themselves or others, house arrest could ensure the safety of the community and McFarland.

“All I can tell you, it’s never too late, and if this isn’t rock bottom for you, I don’t know what is,” Chelini said. “You have family to support you, you have people who matter, and you matter to them.”

McFarland is due back in court Oct. 16.
