LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — An arrest report detailed the pursuit of a stolen U-Haul truck that resulted in the arrest of a man, who now faces misdemeanor and felony charges related to the incident.
The incident occurred on Saturday, just after 7:15 p.m., near the 1200 block of Newport Street.
According to law enforcement documents, officers in a patrol vehicle saw a U-Haul box truck slam on its brakes at a stop sign, and a woman exited the vehicle through the passenger door before walking away.
The box truck turned into a cul-de-sac before officers tried to stop the vehicle, suspecting it might have been stolen.
When officers attempted to stop the box truck by parking approximately a foot from the vehicle’s front bumper, the driver, identified in the arrest report as William Fancher, accelerated as officers exited the cruiser.
The officers leapt away as the U-Haul collided with the cruiser.
After the collision, officers began following the U-Haul on surface streets. During the pursuit, police discovered that the box truck had been stolen, according to police documents.
The vehicle eventually entered U.S. 95, where it reached speeds of 80 mph. After a failed precision immobilization technique, or PIT, maneuver, the U-Haul exited the freeway into heavy oncoming traffic, where it struck another vehicle.
The box truck continued, speeding down the street and disregarding traffic laws before turning into a parking lot at 2311 W. Charleston Blvd., where the U-Haul struck an awning atop an ATM and destroyed it, according to the arrest report. The pursuit continued until the box truck stopped at the intersection of Fremont Street and Charleston Boulevard.
Fancher exited the U-Haul and was face down in the street before officers arrived to take him into custody.
Detectives later determined that the U-Haul had been stolen from a Dollar General on Lake Mead Boulevard in North Las Vegas. Officers said Fancher was taken into custody with 10 shaved keys, which investigators said are a tool commonly used by car thieves to steal vehicles.
Fancher faces charges of felony assault on a protected person with a deadly weapon; gross misdemeanor possession of burglary tools; felony possession, receipt or transfer of a stolen vehicle; and felony disobedience of a peace officer in a manner that endangered other persons or property.
He is being held without bail and is due to appear in court at 9 a.m. July 30.
