LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – The UNLV men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams earned one event win and 31 top-10 finishes on the opening day of the annual UNLV Finis Invitational, Monday, at Jim Reitz Pool.
THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:
– Starting off the night strong, the 200 free relay ‘A’ squad of senior Pilar Cohen, junior Erika Carlson, junior Averi Webb and senior Bridget Sullivan combined for a season-best time of 1:31.39 to place second.
– Also showing strong contributions in the 200 free relay, the ‘B’ squad of junior Kyra Tonsil, freshman Halayna Montrichard, sophomore Ava Olson and senior Heather Gardner placed eighth in a season-best time of 1:33.89.
– In the 500 free, Carslon swam to a third-place finish (4:50.95) while senior Gina Miller reached the wall in fourth (4:54.26).
– In the 500 free B final, junior Marta Klimek earned the heat victory and placed ninth overall with a time of 4:56.39. Ashley Hughes finished right behind her in seventh overall with a time of 4:57.78.
– Leading the Scarlet & Gray women in the 200 IM, freshman Grace Wharton placed sixth (2:03.44). Just a step behind was Olson who placed seventh (2:04.61).
-Adding top-10 finishes in the 200 IM were sophomore Victoria Villarreal in ninth with the B final win (2:04.71) and junior Jillian Moses in 10th (2:05.35).
– In the 50 free, Sullivan collected a sixth-place finish, touching in 23.14 seconds. Adding two more top-10 finishes in the event, Webb won the B final and placed ninth overall with a season-best time of 23.19 seconds, while Gardner finished 10th after posting a season-best time of 23.40 seconds.
– In the final women’s event of the night, the 400 medley relay ‘A’ squad (Montrichard, Gardner, Webb and Carlson) earned a fifth-place finish with a time of 3:44.24.
– The 400 medley relay ‘B’ group of Wharton, graduate student Madison Petschauer, freshman Lauren Palacios and Sullivan placed eighth (3:46.89).
– In the 3-meter event, freshman Allyse Abbott led the way with a fourth-place score of 257.15. Joining her Rebel counterparts were sophomore Chelsey Dorosh in fifth (256.65) and senior Vika Yanovska in sixth (254.15).
THE RUNDOWN – MEN:
– Jump starting the Rebels men’s team’s events, the 200 free relay ‘A’ squad of redshirt freshman Emil Perez, sophomore Wikus Potgieter, freshman Lucas Diermayr and senior Daniel Nicusan earned a second-place finish with a season-best mark of 1:19.40.
– The Rebels’ 200 free relay ‘C’ squad (1:21.98) and ‘B’ squads (1:22.32) contributed eighth-place and ninth-place performances, respectively.
– Redshirt sophomore Colby Raffel took second in the 500 free, posting a season-best time of 4:26.20. Following two-spots behind was senior Andrew Navarro, who placed fourth with a season-best time of 4:29.42.
– Additionally in the 500 free, freshman Caleb Manning placed seventh (4:35.11) and sophomore Hayden Lambert placed eighth in a season-best time of 4:28.23.
– In the men’s 200 IM, senior Cooper Kiel placed second overall with a time of 1:47.79, while junior Ian Belflower (1:48.42) finished third overall.
– Adding a top-3 finish in the 50 free, Nicusan posted a season-best time of 19.70 seconds that placed him in third. In the same event, Perez earned an eighth place finish with a time of 20.54.
– Ending the night strong, the men’s 400 medley relay ‘A’ team earned a victory after the quartet of Potgieter, Nicusan, Belflower and Perez combined for a season-best time of 3:09.73.
– Additionally, the men’s 400 medley relay ‘B’ team of sophomore Tatsuki Inoue, senior Adnan Beji, senior Michael Brietbart and freshman Kiril Stepanov finished fourth with a season-best time of 3:14.95.
– In the 1-meter event, sophomore Alex Vazquez posted a score of 314.10 to land in second place.
– Senior Dima Tereshchenko finished fourth in the 1-meter event with a score of 283.05.
UP NEXT: The UNLV Finis Invitational continues on Tuesday with swimming prelims at 9:30 a.m. PT, followed by swimming finals at 5 p.m. PT.
