LVMPD told FOX5 this year, when we saw thefts going down, that over 2023 and into 2024 automakers provided software updates and other anti-theft devices to people in the valley, which reduced thefts.
Many around Las Vegas had their cars stolen after a TikTok challenge exposed how to steal certain older model Kia and Hyundai cars. We asked Metro if there’s any other reason for the big drop in thefts this year but so far haven’t heard back.
North Las Police told FOX5 auto thefts were down 42 percent from January 1 to November 30, 2024, compared to 2023. The department cited several factors for the drop in thefts.
“Those things were the opening of our North Central Area Command, the hiring of new officers, community partnerships, citizens patrol being visible throughout our communities and special detail units targeting auto thefts. Our department continues to work on decreasing that percentage as we enter the new year,” said the North Las Vegas Police Department.
FOX5 also reached out to the Henderson Police Department which said it would check its figures.
