1) Charleston Blvd & Decatur Blvd

2) Flamingo Rd & Rainbow Rd

3) Charleston Blvd & Hualapai Way

4) Blue Diamond Rd & Arville St

5) Tropicana Ave & Decatur Blvd

6) Flamingo Rd & Arville St

7) Boulder Hwy between Sahara Ave & Karen Ave

8) Flamingo Rd & Pecos Rd

9) Flamingo Rd & Maryland Pkwy

10) Las Vegas Blvd & Cheyenne Ave

11) Washington Ave & Nellis Blvd

12) Las Vegas Blvd & Cashman Ctr

There have been 108 deaths on the roads in metro jurisdiction so far this year.

“Those are family members. Those are people. It’s not just a number,” shared LVMPD Traffic Lieutenant Cody Fulwiler.

For Fulwiler, the number of fatalities took on a new a reality on December 12th last year. His officer, Colton Pulsipher, was killed driving home to his wife and children hit head on by a wrong way driver on the I-15.

“Person had been drinking and driving through our valley, through the streets… He was actually riding through and trying to prevent from what ultimately happened to him. This person drove through two of the intersections that we’ve identified,” Lieutenant Fulwiler revealed.

Lieutenant Fulwiler questions if the drunk driver was stopped before getting on the freeway, would officer Pulsipher still be here?

“It definitely lasts with me and will forever,” Fulwiler explained.

Now Metro is taking a drastic approach to save lives pulling officers from their normal duties to patrol the 12 intersections identified as the deadliest over the last three years.

“Not only patrol officers, but officers normally assigned to investigative bureaus going out multiple days throughout the week and multiple different shifts… it’s been very successful so far as we just started this in the beginning of August and we’re going to continue this for the year,” Lieutenant Fulwiler.

They are specifically looking for the three things that make crashes deadly: speed, failure to yield right of way, and impairment.

There were 160 deaths in Metro’s area last year. The department’s goal is to cut that down to no more than 125 this year but the coming months, the holidays, are traditionally some of the deadliest with parties and alcohol.

In addition to upping enforcement, Metro has worked with local officials on the engineering of deadly roads.

In Clark County, a fence has been added in the middle of Boulder Highway to stop pedestrians from jaywalking.

In the city of Las Vegas, roads have been widened in the Medical District.
