LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department unveiled one of 11 new Tesla Cybertrucks on FOX5 Thursday, with the vehicles set to begin patrol operations next week.
Officer Robert Wicks said the privately donated vehicles allow the department to advance its technological capabilities without using taxpayer funds.
“This is the sheriff’s vision. It’s always been to be the most technologically advanced department in the country, if not the world,” Wicks said. “Not a single penny came out of tax funds for this.”
The vehicles require special certification for officers to operate due to differences from traditional patrol cars, including turn radius and speed capabilities. Officers must complete a course through the department’s Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) program before driving the Cybertrucks.
Public gets preview at community events
The Cybertrucks made appearances at Halloween events where residents could sit in both the front and back seats. The vehicles are equipped with standard police transport capabilities, including the ability to transport arrested suspects.
The vehicles feature a central touchscreen that controls all functions, replacing traditional dashboard gauges and controls. Officers can even listen to music while maintaining radio communication capabilities.
Wicks said the Cybertrucks will begin regular patrol functions starting next week.
