LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – As excessive heat is about to move into the Las Vegas Valley, there are still ways to enjoy being outside, even with temperatures around 110°.

Misters, those systems many restaurants and homeowners use, can reduce the outside temperature by as much as 30 degrees if you are nearby.

“Misting systems are very effective, especially in our environment, due to the dryness of the valley,” said Douglas Sims, Dean of School of Math and Science at the College of Southern Nevada.

“Think of when it is really hot and you jump into a pool. It cools you down quick. It has to do with heat capacity of the water. When the mister sprays out the water, the water goes out in little droplets and the droplets grab basically al ot of heat in the air, which reduces the temperature,” he added.

At Kona Grill at Boca Park in Summerlin, patrons still enjoy the outdoor patio in the surging heat.

“Cools things down really well,” said Ralph Mavarino, General Manager of the restaurant.

Mavarino added, “It will drop temperatures down 10, maybe 15 degrees. When the sun goes down, this place fills up.”
