Mojave Max emerges from burrow at latest date on record

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Clark County’s favorite tortoise has made his latest emergence yet Thursday.

Mojave Max officially emerged from his burrow at Springs Preserve around 2:09 p.m. His previous record was April 23, 2023.

The Department of Environment and Sustainability tells FOX5 his late emergence is likely from a lack of consistently high temperatures well into the spring.

“The ground has not warmed enough for him to realize we are almost into May,” Clark County said.

Mojave Max has lived in this burrow since 2023.
