LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – North Las Vegas police are investigating after a motorcycle rider was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Thursday night.

According to a police report, officers were dispatched to the area of Owens Ave. near James St. at approximately 6:21 p.m. after reports of a crash involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle.

Arriving officers determined that the crash involved a blue Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a brown 2011 Chevrolet HHR. The motorcycle rider, a 29-year-old male, was ejected from the motorcycle and appeared to have suffered serious injuries.

Medical personnel responded to the scene where the motorcyclist was pronounced dead. The driver of the Chevrolet HHR was unharmed.

The NLVPD Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) was notified and took over the investigation. Their preliminary investigation determined that the Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling westbound on Owens Ave. at a high rate of speed. At that time, the Chevrolet HHR was stopped westbound on Owens Ave., near James St., in the center turn lane.

Police said that the Harley-Davidson reportedly attempted to pass around other vehicles by swerving into the center median. The Harley-Davidson then struck the rear of the Chevrolet HHR, causing the motorcycle rider to be ejected from the motorcycle.

The driver of the Chevrolet HHR, 43-year-old Crystal Hughey, showed signs of impairment and was placed under arrest. Hughey was booked into the North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center on charges of DUI, felony child endangerment, and other traffic-related offenses.

Traffic officers are continuing to investigate this crash and noted that speed and no motorcycle license endorsement are believed to be factors for the motorcyclist.

The identification of the deceased, along with the cause and manner of death, will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
