Moulin Rouge tower demolished in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — On this day in history, July 25, 2010 marked a bittersweet chapter in this history of Las Vegas’s Historic Westside.

Crews demolished the iconic tower of the Moulin Rouge casino.

The Moulin Rouge opened in May of 1955 as the first racially-integrated hotel casino in the nation. The casino played a key role in the ultimate desegregation of Las Vegas, but it struggled to succeed.

It changed hands many time over the years. A series of fires hit the property in the early 2000’s, and in 2010 the decision was made to pull down the tower and the famous front facade.

The sign now resides in its former glory at the Neon Museum.
