LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — Mount Charleston’s only school is back open for the new school year.
Monday morning, Lundy Elementary students got ready for the first day of school, just like the rest of Clark County School District. To welcome them back, there were volunteers with METRO out in the front court yard as they directed parents and students where to go.
As the school bell rang, cheer erupted out front as this is the first time the bell rang in nearly two years.
“The community fought tooth and nail for it and we got it,” Anthony Armis said.
Armis’s son would be bussed nearly two hours every day just to get to school in Indian Springs while Lundy was closed.
However, for this year, it was just a couple minute drive to school.
“At 6:15 he would be on the bus, but at 6:15 he was still sleeping at home,” Armis said.
Being taught right by their home was important for parents like Kimberley Caroleo who dropped off her kindergartner.
“Being able to be up here and have this education is very exciting for her,” Caroleo said.
Lundy Elementary had to close in August of 2023, after Tropical Storm Hilary tore through the area.
What was supposed to be a temporary closure, led to parents getting a letter last year saying the doors would not reopen. Since then, FOX5 has followed every step of the fight.
From long school board meetings where the board originally voted no to reversing the decision months later after the community kept pushing.
“We love our children up here, and it shows you that everyone take care of each other here we all know each other,” Katie Reeh said. “I’m not surprised at the effort that went into it and I’m proud of everyone here.”
“The school is the center of the community,” said parent Rye Hall.
Up to $7.8 million was allocated to repair Lundy, last week the district allowed the media inside for a glimpse of the repairs.
There will be an official ribbon cutting on Wednesday.
